Blake tried to give Lilith the bedroom, but she insisted on taking the sofa for the night. She was as stubborn as she was beautiful, he thought as he closed the bedroom door.

He dropped into bed, thoroughly exhausted. It was the kind of exhaustion that made him feel good, though, as if he had accomplished something significant. The binding ritual was simple, in his opinion, but he had insisted on going over it several times with Lilith. They made a list of items they would need to buy, and he looked over it before he turned off the lamp by his bed.

In the darkness, he thought about Lilith. The soft curves, bright eyes filled with intelligence and just enough curiosity to support her eagerness to learn. He had accidentally brushed her arm with his hand a few times, and alone in the dark, he admitted to himself that it was not just an accident after the first time. He liked the feel of her warm, smooth skin under his hand.

Rolling to his side, he opened his eyes. Timmy was there. They were lying face-to-face and Blake screamed, pedaled backward, falling out of the bed. It had been two weeks since he had seen Timmy. The foul odor had not preceded the visit.

Back on his feet, Blake looked for the dead boy. The door flew inward and Lilith stood there in her night clothes, which covered very little. Her eyes were wide as she fumbled for the light switch.

“Are you okay?” She moved toward Blake.

Stammering, he nodded. “Yes, I’m fine. Please. Go back to bed. I’m fine, really.”

She backed out, leaving Blake to his fears. He turned off the light and went back to bed, hoping that the visitations were finished for the night.

He thought he would not sleep but fell asleep quickly. He dreamed of Timmy’s exorcism. It was a vivid dream and in it, Lilith was the one who died in the end.

The demon’s voice drifted through his dream. “Be careful who you catch feelings for. You wouldn’t want me to introduce myself to her, would you?”

“No!” He woke screaming the word over and over.

Lilith burst through the door again. “Blake! What’s going on?” Her hair was disheveled, flattering her sleep-puffy face.

Remembering the demon’s threat, he shook his head and slid to the side of the bed. “Bad dreams. I have them sometimes. I’ll be out directly, Lilith.”

Again, she backed out of his room and closed the door. He listened to her movements as she made coffee and got dressed. It was not going to be easy for him to keep it strictly professional with Lilith.

For her safety, he had to find a way.
